Rules and scoring

Placeguessr drops you into five photos from around the globe. Study each one, then tap the map to pin where you think it was taken. The closer you land, the more points you score, and an exact pin earns a bonus. No timers, no pressure, just geography instincts.

How to play Placeguessr

Placeguessr is a solo geography game with a simple loop: you get five 360° panoramas taken in five everyday places, and for each one you study the view, then tap the world map to pin where you think it was taken. The closer your pin lands to the real spot, the more points you score. There is no timer, no lives, and no penalty for being wrong, only a smaller score, so it is a relaxed way to test how well you know the planet. The 500-location pool remembers what this browser has already shown and finishes every unseen location before beginning a new cycle.

How scoring works

Each round is worth up to 1,000 points. The game measures the straight-line distance between your pin and the true location in kilometres, and that distance decides your score: the further you are, the fewer points you earn, down to zero for a pin on the wrong side of the planet. Pin the exact spot, within a kilometre, and you earn a 250-point bonus on top of the maximum. It rewards precision without punishing a brave guess.

Read the view, not the map

The trick to Placeguessr is in the details of the panorama. Street signs, vegetation, architecture, vehicles, and even the colour of the soil can place a scene on a continent. Once you have narrowed it down, think about the shape of the coastline or the position of a mountain range on the map and pin accordingly. Practice sharpens the eye, which is what makes the game quietly addictive.

Why it works as a break or a classroom warm-up

Placeguessr needs no setup and no account. It is a five-minute round, which makes it a natural coffee-break game, a geography-class warm-up, or a friendly bet between friends about who knows the world better. Because it is solo, you can play it anywhere and compare scores with others on the leaderboard. Teachers like it because the reveal explains the answer with the distance shown, so a wrong guess still teaches something about where a place actually sits. It is the kind of game that starts a conversation, someone swears a view was in Italy and it turns out to be a mountain town in Peru, and suddenly the whole room is debating geography.

Devices & requirements

Placeguessr runs in any modern browser on desktop, tablet, or phone. The map is built for both mouse and touch, and the 360° views stream on demand so even a slow connection stays playable. Nothing to install, nothing to download.

How many panoramas are in a game of Placeguessr?

Five 360° panoramas, one per round. Each one shows a real place with a real location, and your pin is scored by distance.

What happens if I guess completely wrong?

You score zero points for that round, but the game continues. A wrong pin on one round does not end the game, it just costs you those points.

Do I need an account to play?

No. Placeguessr is a solo game that runs in your browser with no sign-up. Scores can be saved to the leaderboard with a nickname.

Will Placeguessr repeat the same locations?

Not during a 500-location cycle on the same browser. Placeguessr remembers each panorama it has shown and uses every unseen location before starting a new cycle.
